- Hundreds attended a rally at Alberta Legislature grounds on Saturday to show support for the people of Afghanistan and to put pressure on the federal government to do more. Canada's mission to airlift those fleeing Taliban rule ended on Thursday after helping to evacuate more than 3,700 people from Kabul.
- As COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to surge, Alberta Health Services says it will be postponing 30% of non-urgent surgeries and procedures in the Edmonton zone, starting Aug. 30. In a news release, AHS said the postponements were necessary to create more capacity in acute care and intensive care units.
- The Edmonton Elks revealed that 83.5% of players and coaches have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. According to the CFL's protocols, if the game against the Argonauts cannot be rescheduled, the Elks must prove that 85% of its players have at least one dose or the entire team will not receive its salary for the game.
- Coal mining near the North Saskatchewan River could affect water quality and aquatic life in Edmonton according to a risk assessment conducted by Epcor and presented to council's utility committee Friday. Currently, 5% of the area feeding the river upstream have coal leases in place. The North Saskatchewan River is the city's only source of drinking water.
- Edmonton's Sikh community is once again the target of hate. Singh Sabha Gurdwara in Mill Woods, which was the victim of harassment for over six months earlier this year, has begun receiving harassing phone calls over the past two weeks.
- The bus terminal at West Edmonton Mall is being relocated to the other side of the shopping centre to make way for construction on the Valley Line West LRT.
