- The city signed an agreement with Kehewin Cree Nation for the development of Edmonton's first urban reserve. The reserve would give First Nations communities the opportunity to obtain land within city limits. Kehewin Chief Okimaw Vernon Watchmaker said it will strengthen the sense of community and allow for economic opportunity.
- The city and Edmonton Police Service will observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30 by granting employees a day off. The city will also mark the day through community events.
- Edmonton Catholic Schools has taken contact tracing into its own hands, asking parents to notify them when their kid tests positive so that the school division can notify close contacts themselves. Nearly 40 Alberta schools are being investigated for outbreaks.
- Red Deer Regional Hospital has been forced to airlift patients to Calgary and Edmonton as it struggles to deal with the increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations. On Wednesday,CEO Dr. Verna Yiu said Alberta Health Services has reached out to other provinces for help managing ICU patients.
- The province declared a state of public health emergency on Wednesday and imposed new COVID-19 restrictions on workplaces, indoor social gatherings, businesses, places of worship and more.
- The province announced it would be rolling out an Restrictions Exemption Program — which is essentially a vaccine passport system — starting Sept. 20. Businesses that require proof of vaccination or a negative test won't be subject to the new COVID-19 restrictions. Edmonton's businesses and doctors welcomed the news.
- The Alberta NDP are calling for an emergency legislature sitting to pass a law giving Albertans paid sick leave and reinstate a ban on commercial evictions. The legislature is not scheduled to sit until the last week of October.
