- Two new scramble crosswalks in Old Strathcona have been causing significant delays for drivers. The city is standing behind the changes, saying they will improve pedestrian safety.
- The Edmonton Public School Board is considering renaming Prince Charles School in the north side of Edmonton to "better reflect the students and teaching happening in the school." The majority of the students at the school are First Nations, Metis, or Inuit.
- The Edmonton Heritage Council is concerned over the University of Alberta's plans to demolish the Mactaggart mansion, Soaring, in Highlands, as well as four historic Ring Houses.
- An Edmonton YouTuber, Zachary Aubert, has been invited to watch the launch of the historic SpaceX flight, which is scheduled to take off on Sept. 15 at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.
- The province has introduced new temporary public health measures as COVID-19 cases continue to rise and overwhelm the health-care system. Masks are now mandatory for all indoor public spaces and workplaces (except schools); there is a 10pm curfew on liquor sales (although several rodeos have been exempt); and unvaccinated people are encouraged to limit their social contacts. The province has also brought back routine testing and mandatory isolation for those who test positive for COVID-19 or have symptoms.
- Frustrated over the new temporary health measures, some Albertans have taken to protesting outside hospitals. Alberta Health Services (AHS) president and CEO, Dr. Verna Yiu, wrote an op-ed addressing the protests.
- In an effort to improve vaccination pickup, Premier Jason Kenney introduced a new $100 vaccine incentive program for those who receive a first or second dose of vaccine between Sept. 3 and Oct. 14. The move has been subject of much anger and derision on social media. One Edmonton business owner even started offering $100 to vaccinated employees.
- Alberta Health Services (AHS) is once again postponing scheduled surgeries to make capacity for rising COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. As much as 50% of surgeries or procedures may be delayed in the Edmonton zone. AHS, which has been plagued by staff shortages, is bringing in nurses from outside the province to assist with the fourth wave.
