What is the safest way to get groceries?
Maintain distance and go infrequently if social-distancing; get help if in isolation.
For those practicing social distancing, AHS recommends keeping at least two metres from others when going out for groceries, limiting trips, shopping at less busy times, cleaning grocery carts and washing hands before and after shopping.
For those in self-isolation — that is, those who are staying away from others because they have symptoms of coronavirus (regardless of whether they have been tested) or might have been exposed to it — Alberta Health Services recommends using delivery services or asking friends and family to pick up groceries. Wear a surgical mask to leave home for urgent errands.
Grocery chains like Sobeys and Save on Foods have reduced hours and changed policies to protect shoppers and employees. Steps include additional cleaning, screens at checkouts and floor markers to keep people spaced apart in checkout lines. Workers who feel sick are required to self-isolate under AHS policies to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Stores are reporting high volumes of online orders and are asking customers who can shop in store to leave the delivery option available to seniors, people with disabilities, and those with the novel coronavirus.
Spontivly has repurposed its app to help people find groceries and other supplies.
