Edmonton-based venture capital firm Sprout.vc has invested in a health-tech communications company called Care2Talk, bringing the Victoria startup's fundraise to $1 million.

Care2Talk provides a cloud platform that allows seniors in care homes to easily connect with family and caregivers, helping to ease the impact of isolation on residents. Founder and CEO Jordan Schley said he realized the need when he saw how isolation was affecting residents of his grandfather's assisted living facility and how inaccessible existing communication technologies were for this demographic.

"We're thrilled to see our usage grow rapidly on simple connectivity. We are even more excited to launch Care2Talk Health, a telehealth platform fully dedicated to senior care," Schley said in a news release.

Care2Talk has already seen positive early adoption and response from assisted living facilities in Canada.

"We are excited to invest in and help grow a company that is improving the quality of life for our aging population," said Mark Benning, partner at Sprout.vc. "Their rapid market adoption is indicative of the challenges that have become apparent, globally, due to COVID-19 in the senior care industry, and which governments and private operators are actively looking to solve."

This is the fourth Western Canadian startup to receive funding from Sprout.vc's second seed-stage venture capital fund, which now has over $10 million under management. Three B.C.-based companies — LetHub, Swede, and Frontly — were announced as Fund II's first investments earlier this month. The firm is interested in software-as-a-service companies in the business-to-business space that have shown early traction.
