  • A video showing the release of a detainee into Edmonton's Chinatown from a corrections transport van has sparked calls for reform. Karl Miu of the Chinatown Business Association criticized the release method, suggesting it makes the area an unofficial discharge destination without adequate support. He urged Alberta to tighten offender discharge protocols. Edmonton-City Centre MLA David Shepherd and Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack emphasized the need for better reintegration plans, highlighting that current practices undermine public safety and community revitalization efforts in the neighbourhood.
  • The Government of Canada announced $2.2 million in federal funding for REACH Edmonton to support a youth crime prevention project through the Crime Prevention Action Fund. The project will target Indigenous and racialized youth, as well as young people with repeated contact with the criminal justice system, using non-contact boxing, mentoring and coaching for those ages 9 to 17. Participants ages 18 to 30 will receive martial arts training alongside mental health counselling, education, employment and skills-development supports.
  • Métis alt-pop artist Robin Cisek was named the new musician in residence for the Edmonton Public Library. Working from the Stanley A. Milner Library, Cisek offers free mentorship, one-on-one sessions and workshops to help local artists develop their skills, including advice on navigating the music industry's business side. The two-time CBC Searchlight Top 100 finalist is the program's third musician in residence.
  • The Edmonton Police Service said a Sept. 7 fire at a Parkview home slated for demolition is being investigating as suspicious. The fire happened one day after nearly 200 residents gathered to protest infill projects in the neighbourhood. No injuries were reported and firefighters extinguished the blaze. The property has a permit to be a four-dwelling row house with four secondary suites.
  • Rogers and Oilers Entertainment Group extended their partnership for 10 more years, keeping Rogers Place as the home of the Edmonton Oilers through 2036. To mark Rogers Place's 10-year anniversary, Rogers is distributing more than 1,500 Oilers tickets to customers throughout the season, including 300 for the home opener against the Vancouver Canucks on Sept. 29.
  • The Edmonton Oilers signed forward Alex Formenton to a one-year contract worth $850,000 USD. The 26-year-old spent three seasons with HC Ambri-Piotta in Switzerland, recording 33 goals and 19 assists for 52 points before signing with Edmonton. He was one of five members of Canada's 2018 world junior team acquitted last year of sexual assault charges stemming from an incident following a Hockey Canada gala in London, Ontario. The NHL reinstated the players in December 2025, while an independent appeal board later found they had breached Hockey Canada's code of conduct. Formenton was the only one eligible for immediate reinstatement to Hockey Canada-sanctioned programs.
