  • Edmonton city council's audit committee heard that three key recommendations from auditors to improve municipal administration, including fraud awareness and tax risk management, are overdue by up to eight months. City administration has implemented 78% of recommended changes, such as enhancements to the cybersecurity program and a formal access plan for gift cards. An additional 17 recommendations are expected to be completed within six months, though some may face delays due to staffing issues.
  • The Edmonton Police Service said officers shot and killed a 36-year-old man after responding to reports that he had entered a west-Edmonton home with a firearm and injured a woman and an infant. Police said two women and an infant inside the home suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospital. No police officers were injured and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating.
  • New surveillance footage obtained by CBC News showing at least seven more former detainees being dropped off in Edmonton's Chinatown prompted Mayor Andrew Knack to press the province for a reintegration plan and clearer release protocols. He said the response must include housing, recovery, and follow-up supports, not just instructions about where releases can happen. "The disproportionate pressure that our city faces due to the concentration of these services means that we need a uniquely Edmonton approach," Knack said.
  • Ottawa has approved a $76-million emergency loan for Edmonton-based Flair Airlines as high jet-fuel prices strain airlines. The bailout must be repaid within four years at below-market interest.
  • The City of Edmonton has started rolling out cell service in underground LRT stations after years of dead zones. Riders on Bell and TELUS networks can now connect at Government Centre, Corona, Bay/Enterprise Square, Central, and Churchill stations, with more providers expected in the coming weeks.
  • The Canadian Finals Rodeo will return to Rogers Place, Ice District, and the Edmonton EXPO Centre from Oct. 5-11, with organizers expecting about 43,000 attendees and more than $30 million in economic impact.
