  • The Edmonton Police Service requested about $183 million in capital funding for 2027 to 2030 for technology, communications equipment, and vehicles. City administration recommended $121 million, while police leaders said that would leave the service short more than $61 million and limit its ability to replace outdated technology and keep pace with increasingly complex crime. The service also proposed a $675 million operating budget for 2027, up from $628 million this year.
  • The Edmonton Chamber of Commerce called for consistent services in return for property taxes as city council considers its proposed four-year budget. It welcomed the plan's economic development focus, while residents interviewed by CityNews raised affordability concerns.
  • The City of Edmonton is supporting a permitted Diwali fireworks display at Mill Woods Park on Nov. 8. Festivities begin at 5pm, with fireworks at 8:30pm, weather permitting. • Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack will host an Ask Me Anything on Reddit's r/Edmonton subreddit on Nov. 10 from 7-8 p.m. to answer questions about the city's proposed 2027-2030 budget. The four-year budget prioritizes maintaining and renewing existing infrastructure, strategic growth and upgrading city assets. Knack said investments will focus on everyday services, including snow removal, street cleaning and public transit.
  • Industrial development is shifting from Edmonton to surrounding areas, particularly Nisku and Acheson, as businesses seek lower property taxes and transportation costs, according to an Avison Young report. Edmonton recorded more than 172,000 square feet of negative industrial absorption in the third quarter, while Nisku added nearly 220,000 square feet of occupied space and Acheson gained 77,000 square feet. Leduc County's industrial tax rate is less than half of Edmonton's, a gap expected to widen with planned increases to the city's non-residential taxes.
  • The Edmonton Elks will host the BC Lions in the West Final at Commonwealth Stadium on Nov. 7 at 5:30pm. It will be Edmonton's first home playoff game since 2015. Game tickets cover transit fares from two hours before kickoff until two hours after the game. No stadium parking will be available.
  • The Alberta Council of Women's Shelters said rising costs are making it harder for survivors to leave abusive relationships. It reported more than 10,000 people on affordable housing waiting lists in Edmonton. The council recommended dedicated housing pathways and improved financial supports for survivors.
